Red Sox camp officially opened on Thursday with the reporting date for pitchers and catchers. Two of the team’s biggest reasons for optimism in 2016 — starting pitcher David Price and closer Craig Kimbrel — weren’t wasting any time getting acquainted on the field.

Red Sox president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski brought Price — as a free agent — and Kimbrel — via trade — to Boston during a busy offseason after the team struggled to its third last-place finish in four seasons in 2015.
The new acquisitions weren’t the only pitchers spotted tossing the ball around on Thursday. Clay Buchholz also took some time to get loose.

Members of Boston’s 2016 pitching staff were joined at Fenway South by Hall of Famer Pedro Martinez.

Pitchers and catchers will have their first official camp workout on Friday. While many of them have already arrived in Fort Myers, the official reporting date for position players is Feb. 23, with first official full squad workout scheduled for the following day.
