Following an analysis of safety at Fenway park by the MLB, the Red Sox announced the club will follow the league’s recommendations and expand the backstop netting behind home plate for the 2016 season, according to a press release from the Red Sox.

Fan safety became a paramount topic for the Red Sox after two people were injured by broken bats and foul balls in the stands over the summer. The team pledged to review stadium safety in June, after MLB owners twice rejected players’ requests for extended protective netting.

The club says it’s currently in the process of evaluating different design options for the expanded netting, and says it is reaching out to the ticket holders most affected by the planned changes.
