Ben Cherington will teach a class at Columbia
Former Red Sox general manager Ben Cherington has landed a new gig.
Cherington, who resigned from his role with the Red Sox in August, will join the Columbia University faculty as an “Executive-in-Residence,’’ the university announced Monday.
Cherington took over the Red Sox following the team’s epic September collapse in September of 2011. His tenure included two last-place finishes and one World Series title. The team he assembled this season also finished in last place. Dave Dombrowski’s hiring as Red Sox club president hastened Cherington’s departure.
At Columbia this spring, Cherington will teach a course “on the topic of leadership in sport’’ in the Master of Science in Sports Management degree program.
“Two of my favorite parts of working in baseball have been to collaborate with outstanding people looking to make a difference, and, to help others grow,’’ Cherington said in a statement. “I hope sharing my experience can help play a small role in Columbia’s mission to prepare its students for a meaningful and impactful career in the sports industry’’.
