Hazen, who has been with the team for 10 years and assistant general manager since 2012, will serve under the team’s new president of baseball operations, Dave Dombrowski, who announced the promotion.
“Over his 10 years with the Red Sox, Mike has proven to be an invaluable member of the baseball operations department,’’ Dombrowski said in a statement. “We are thrilled to have him in this position, and I’m excited to have him working with me on every aspect of baseball operations.’’
At a Thursday press conference, Hazen said Dombrowksi will still have the final say in personnel decisions. “Obviously, the role of general manager will be a little different here with Dave,’’ he said.
The Red Sox hired Dombrowski in August to replace outgoing team president and CEO Larry Lucchino. At the time, the team said GM Ben Cherington “declined the opportunity’’ to stay on under Dombrowski.
Hazen, a 39-year-old Abington native, played baseball at Princeton University. He was drafted by the San Diego Padres and played minor-league ball for two years, before joining the Cleveland Indians’ scouting department.
Hazen lives in Westwood with his wife, Nicole, and their four sons.
“It’s a privilege and an honor to work for the Boston Red Sox,’’ he said. “It always has been since I joined 10 years ago.’’
