Surprise, surprise.

Boston’s David Ortiz was announced Monday as the American League’s Player of the Week for the week of Sept. 7-13, over which he led baseball with a 1.111 slugging percentage, hit for 20 total bases and, oh, yeah, slugged his 500th career homer in a win over Tampa Bay.

Big Papi became just the 27th player in MLB history to achieve the milestone and just the fourth member of the Red Sox to do so, after Jimmie Foxx, Ted Williams and former teammate Manny Ramirez.

Ortiz came on strong after a slow first few months of the season and is now slashing .275/.361/.556 on the year with a team-leading 34 homers, 95 RBI and 67 runs scored.

This is Ortiz’s first time receiving the honor since the 2011 season, and his sixth time overall.
