Mookie Betts attempted to steal third in the eighth inning of the Boston Red Sox’s 3-1 loss to the New York Yankees. And he was thrown out.

Or was he?

The play was reviewed and upheld. Neither Betts nor interim manager Torey Lovullo looked pleased with the initial call.

David Ortiz swung and missed, and Yankees catcher Brian McCann threw the ball to third, which appeared not to come in time. But Betts slid too far and came off the base, according to what the third base umpire Vic Carapazza saw.

Betts saw it differently.

“I felt like I was safe the whole time,’’ Betts told MLB.com after the game. “As I was sitting there, I felt my foot start moving, and I wasn’t moving it. So I felt like when [Headley] rolled over, he was pushing me off the bag, and whether it was intentional or unintentional, I felt like I was pushed.’’

Betts hit 1-for-4 on the night. The Sox play the third and final game of the series against the Yankees on Wednesday 4:05 p.m.
