Red Sox finally lift ‘Curse of Affleck’

“Can you believe it?’’ Boston Red Sox broadcaster Joe Castiglione might say.

The Red Sox lifted the “Curse of Affleck’’ in dramatic fashion Saturday afternoon with a 22-10 win over the Seattle Mariners at Fenway Park.

Not quite the Curse of the Bambino, the Curse of Affleck dates to the release of Good Will Hunting in 1997 — the team hasn’t been able to win on Ben Affleck’s birthday, August 15, in that time, for 15 straight losses.

The longest losing streak by any team on a specific date is 18, done three times, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.

Jackie Bradley Jr., Alejandro De Aza, and Pablo Sandoval helped reverse the curse, as they all homered off Mariners ace and past Cy Young winner Felix Hernandez. Bradley circled the bases again in the eighth, while pitcher Wade Miley picked up the win.

Affleck, a lifelong Sox fan who grew up in Cambridge, turned 43 Saturday.
