Why it’s hard for Red Sox fans to hate the Yankees today

The century-old Boston Red Sox-New York Yankees rivalry took a brief hiatus Friday evening.

After Red Sox manager John Farrell announced that he has a “highly curable’’ form of cancer at a pre-game press conference, the Yankees immediately took to Twitter to send their best.

The tweet drew praise from Sox fans:

The 53-year-old Farrell said he’s stepping away from the team for the rest of the season as he undergoes treatment. Boston bench coach Torey Lovullo will run the club in his absence.

Farrell said the lymphoma was discovered when he had hernia surgery earlier this week.
