The Red Sox (and PawSox) can’t win a game when this guy does the play-by-play

Josh Maurer’s suits need a wash — anything to cleanse this chronic case of bad juju. The broadcaster is on an epic losing streak, and for the sake of the Red Sox organization, he needs to find a way to appease the baseball gods.

The Boston and Pawtucket Red Sox have combined for a 1-21 record in the last 22 games when Maurer has called play-by-play.

In early July, the Red Sox were racking up wins. There was some promise they could rise into AL East contention.

Then, the losing commenced.

Since July 12, the Sox have lost eight straight games. The voice of the Pawtucket Red Sox took the place of play-by-play mainstay Don Orsillo, as NESN mandated that the broadcaster take an eight-game break.

To be fair, the Sox had already lost one game prior to Maurer’s arrival, and the team looked deflated coming out of the All-Star break. He doesn’t deserve blame for the Sox’s ineptitude — but, that won’t stop the Sox’s fans.

Still, Sox fans will likely feel some relief when Orsillo returns on Friday night to broadcast the Sox’s first game of a three-game series aginst the Detroit Tigers. Maurer is headed back to Triple-A with the PawSox, and then he moves onto UMass football. Judging from the Minutemen’s 3-9 record last year, his prospects for bettering his record look grim.
