Brandon Phillips’s behind-the-back toss to second base was incredibly clutch

Cincinnati Reds second baseman Brandon Phillips dropped jaws on Monday night. AP

On Monday night, Cincinnati Reds second baseman Brandon Phillips showed why he’s a four-time Gold Glove winner.

With two on, two out and Cincinnati holding a 5-4 lead, Chicago Cubs outfielder Jorge Soler smacked a grounder at smooth-operating Phillips. The second baseman made a sliding grab and flipped the ball behind his back to shortstop Eugenio Suarez, who grabbed the ball bare-handed. Phillips’ throw beat Anthony Rizzo at second base and ended the seventh inning.

The ridiculously clutch play preserved the Reds lead and the game finished with a 5-4 Reds’ win.
