Fans select four greatest Red Sox players in franchise history
The fans have picked four players for the Red Sox’s version of Mount Rushmore.
After a month-long period of fan voting, Major League Baseball announced a “Franchise Four’’ for each club. The Sox’s list featured Pedro Martinez, David Ortiz, Ted Williams and Carl Yastrzemski. Fans selected those four from a pool of eight candidates that also included Jim Rice, Dwight Evans, Carlton Fisk and Cy Young. All but Ortiz and Evans are already members of the Baseball Hall of Fame.

While Young did not make the Sox’s list, he was featured in MLB’s “Greatest Pioneers’’ category along with Walter Johnson, Nap Lajoie and Christy Mathewson.
MLB announced the “Franchise Four’’ for all 30 teams at the 2015 MLB All-Star game in Cincinnati. They also announced awards for “Greatest Living Players’’ and “Greatest Negro Leagues Players.’’
