Feisty Pedroia: ‘No more distractions’

(Barry Chin/Globe Staff)

Dustin Pedroia is fed up.

And really, why shouldn’t he be after the Red Sox were humiliated on their own lawn by the Toronto Blue Jays once again on Sunday? The Sox have lost six in a row, are now 10 games below .500 and stand five games out of fourth place as they continue to find original ways to throw dirt on themselves.

Pedroia, who was blinded by the sun enough to have a hand in letting two popups fall in against the Jays in Sunday’s game, pulled few punches when the Sox clubhouse opened up to the media prior to Monday night’s interleague contest vs. the Atlanta Braves.

Pedroia also noted that he feels confident that the Sox can indeed play winning baseball, and that thinking about “what people say about you, that’s not the reality. The reality is you show up for work everyday and work hard and be yourself.’’

Putting his fielding issues from Sunday aside for a moment, Pedroia’s performance this season serves as one of the few positives surrounding this baseball team. He’s batting .309 with an .828 OPS, both of which are above his career averages. His nine home runs are tied for second on the Sox and have him on pace to hit a career-high 23. And he’s been putting up these numbers while batting leadoff for the past three-plus weeks.

The veteran second baseman is doing his part. Now it’s up to his teammates to do theirs.
