Red Sox designated hitter David Ortiz will sit out at least the first two games of the team’s four-game series in Texas this week so he can get his rhythm back, manager John Farrell said Thursday.

“Get some extra work done in the cage, try to get him going again before we get him back in the lineup,’’ Farrell told reporters before the start of the series, according to WEEI. “I think he’s feeling under the weather as well. As you do with every player, you talk and try to keep up to date with each guy individually and this is a chance to hopefully have him get over that, as well as address some of the things and give him a little bit of a breather.’’

Ortiz has struggled mightily this season and has just 3 hits in his last 31 at-bats. Hanley Ramirez, himself hitting just .210 in May after a scorching April, will serve as designated hitter with Ortiz out.

In other Sox news, utility man Daniel Nava has hit the disabled list, with reliever Robbie Ross Jr. taking his place on the roster. Reliever Anthony Varvaro, out for the season with elbow surgery, was placed on the 60-day disabled list to make room for newly acquired outfielder Carlos Peguero. The 28-year-old is hitting .186 over 30 games this season.
