Watch Mike Trout fool Red Sox, ump with ‘swim’ steal

Los Angeles Angels center fielder Mike Trout (27) was called out on this tag by Boston Red Sox center fielder Brock Holt (26) in the fifth inning, but a video review overturned the play and Trout was called safe. The Boston Globe

Befitting his surname, Mike Trout seems to have added another tool to his impressive arsenal: The swim move.

The Los Angeles Angels’ center fiedler evaded the Red Sox and fooled an umpire with an acrobatic “swim’’ steal on Friday night at Fenway Park. In the fifth inning, Trout’s attempted theft of third base seemed to be thwarted by a throw from Boston catcher Blake Swihart. The ball seemed to beat him to the bag, and the third-base umpire initially called him out. Upon replay view, it was evident that Trout managed to slide in safely despite the best efforts of third baseman Brock Holt to tag him out.

Trout would come around to score in what would eventually be a nine-run inning for the Angels. They would go on to win 12-5.

“I’m happy to have replay, because it was almost like ‘The Matrix ‘the way he got around that tag. It was obviously a big slide and a big break,’’ Angels manager Mike Scioscia told MLB.com.
