David Ortiz loses appeal, to serve one game suspension Friday
Red Sox slugger David Ortiz lost his appeal and will serve his one game suspension Friday night when the Sox take on the Toronto Blue Jays. WEEI.com’s Rob Bradford was first to report the news.
The Red Sox are calling up Travis Shaw from Triple-A Pawtucket to start at first base against the Blue Jays, with Mike Napoli serving as the designated hitter with Ortiz unavailable.
Ortiz was suspended for bumping umpire John Tumpane after being ejected from a game against the Baltimore Orioles on April 19 for arguing a checked swing that was called strike. His absence further depletes a lineup that is already without the injured Haley Ramirez.
