Fenway Park’s Beer, Tickets Still the Most Expensive in Baseball

Fans will need to hit the ATM before venturing to Fenway Park this season. The Boston Globe

There’s plenty of optimism surrounding the 2015 Boston Red Sox, and they’ll need to validate that optimism to be worth the most expensive fan experience in baseball. The most serious price gouging appears to be in beer sales, with the Fenway faithful paying the highest price in baseball for just 12 ounces of fun.

Amazingly, that $7.75 price isn’t even a raise from last season. The Phillies and Cubs also charge $7.75 for a beer, but the Phillies provide 21 ounces for that price, and the Cubs 16 ounces.

Team Marketing Report released its 2015 Fan Cost Index report, which finds the Red Sox are once again the most expensive team to see in person in baseball with an FCI of $350.86. The Yankees are next in line at $337.20. The Arizona Diamondbacks are the cheapest team to see, with an FCI of $126.89.

FCI “comprises the prices of four adult average-price tickets, two small draft beers, four small soft drinks, four regular-size hot dogs, parking for one car, and two least expensive, adult-size adjustable caps.’’ TMR determined costs with telephone calls with “representatives of the teams, venues and concessionaires. Identical questions were asked in all interviews.’’

TMR reports that the Red Sox have the highest prices in MLB in terms of average ticket price ($52.34), parking ($35), cap price ($25), and beer ($7.75). Boston’s FCI increased by 3% despite last season’s last place finish, but that figure isn’t far off from the 2.5% MLB average. Royals fans will see the biggest difference in their costs this season, with Kansas City’s FCI increasing by 10.5% on the heels of last year’s surprise pennant run.
