Henry Owens Throws Three No-Hit Innings Against Pittsburgh
The Red Sox couldn’t duplicate the Bruins’ success against their peers from Pittsburgh Saturday, but top pitching prospect Henry Owens provided a silver lining as the Pirates topped the Sox, 5-2, in Grapefruit League action.
Owens tossed three no-hit innings to start the game, overcoming some command issues and keeping the Pirates off the scoreboard despite three walks. He struck out three batters in the contest as well.
You may recall Owens threw a no-hitter in his first start for the AA Portland Sea Dogs last season. That game was rain shortened to six innings, but the message was clear: When he has his best stuff, Owens can overwhelm hitters.
Owens is a consensus Top 100 pitching prospect and frequently mentioned in possible Cole Hamels trade packages. The 22-year-old southpaw figures to start the season in the minor leagues, but a strong spring could accelerate his rise to the big leagues, be it in Boston or elsewhere.
