Affectionately known as “Youk’’ to Red Sox fans, Youk was an eighth-round draft pick of the Sox in 2001. He made his major league debut against the Toronto Blue Jays in 2004. He is the seventh player in Red Sox history to hit a homerun in his first game, going yard on Pat Hentgen.
In his nine seasons in Boston, Youkilis had .287 batting average, with 494 walks and 133 homeruns. He was traded to the Chicago White Sox before the 2012 trade deadline. Youkilis signed with the New York Yankees the following season, but only played 28 games during that injury-plagued season. He then signed with the Tohoku Rakuten Golden Dragons of Nippon Professional Baseball, suiffering another injury-marred season before retiring.
