Alex Rodriguez to Yankees: I’m Sorry
One season after Derek Jeter’s farewell tour, it’s apparently time for Alex Rodriguez’s apology circuit.
Coming off a year-long suspension for his role in MLB’s Biogenesis scandal, Rodriguez met with the New York Yankees in an apparent attempt to clear the air before heading into the 2015 season. In a joint statement released on Tuesday, the Yankees and Rodriguez acknowledged a meeting that included an apology.
“Today we held a meeting at Yankee Stadium between Hal Steinbrenner, Randy Levine, Brian Cashman, Jean Afterman, Alex Rodriguez and Jim Sharp,’’ the statement read. “Alex initiated the meeting and apologized to the organization for his actions over the past several years.
“There was an honest and frank discussion on all of the issues. As far as the Yankees are concerned, the next step is to play baseball in spring training.’’
Rodriguez’s past few years have been a wild ride that has included being at the heart of a massive PED crackdown, slamming former MLB commissioner Bud Selig and even suing the Yankees’ team doctor.
Despite being cleared to rejoin the Yankees, his future with them is unclear. The team signed third baseman Chase Headley to a four-year deal in December, just weeks after general manager Brian Cashman publicly stated that Rodriguez will have to earn at-bats and a position.
