Red Sox Sign Lefty Miley to Three-Year Extension

The Red Sox made a move to further secure their starting rotation on Thursday, signing recently acquired lefthander Wade Miley to a three-year contract extension.
The deal, announced by the executive vice president/general manager Ben Cherington, will pay Miley $19.25 million over the three years, according to a tweet from O’Connell Sports, Miley’s agents, and contains a club option for 2018 that could make the deal worth as much as $30.75 million. Miley received $500,000 to sign and the deal also contains a $500,000 buyout clause, according to Gordon Edes of ESPN Boston. The most money Miley will make for a single season is $8.75 million in the final guaranteed year of the deal, 2017.
By agreeing to the deal, the Red Sox avoid potential arbitration with Miley, who will be a free agent when it expires. Miley, who came to Boston in a trade with the Arizona Diamondbacks in December, is 38-35 with a 3.79 ERA in his four-year career.
