In Yoenis Cespedes, the Red Sox are Getting a Home-Run Hitting Outfielder With A Cannon

Type “Yoenis Cespedes’’ into Youtube, and the search bar can’t fill in the word “throw’’ fast enough.

The first throw that comes up for the new Red Sox outfielder is the unbelievable one he made from left field to nail Howie Kendrick at the plate on June 11. On the first angle, the ball doesn’t even look like it could have come from someone at field level given its trajectory. In addition to the explosiveness of the throw, it hits catcher Derek Norris in the only spot he had a chance to get Kendrick. All Norris has to do is swing his arm down and make the tag.

Cespedes made another one against the Angels a month later, nabbing Albert Pujols (OK so he’s not exactly fleet of foot) at third base as Pujols attempted to go for a triple.

Cespedes has also won the Home Run Derby at the All-Star Game two years in a row. Last year, he hit 17 homers in one round.
