Red Sox Optioning Daniel Nava to Minors

The Red Sox will option outfielder Daniel Nava to Triple A Pawtucket and call up righthander Alex Wilson to take his spot on the 25-man roster, WEEI midday host Lou Merloni said on the air Wednesday afternoon. Nava was summoned into manager John Farrell’s office following Tuesday’s 9-3 loss to the Yankees, according to the Globe’s Peter Abraham.
The Red Sox were in need of a pitcher to relieve their overworked bullpen, and Nava had one minor league option remaining. The 31-year-old Nava is 10 of 67 (.149) this season. The Sox had hoped to use him as a leadoff hitter at times this season, but that became difficult with Nava’s .240 OBP. Right fielder Shane Victorino could return to the Red Sox from the disabled list Thursday. As for Nava’s fate, Abraham tweeted Wednesday:
#RedSox likely to keep the extra pitcher one day then activate @ShaneVictorino on Thursday. @middlebrooks could return from DL on Friday.
