David Ortiz agrees to extension with Red Sox
Red Sox designated hitter David Ortiz has agreed to a one-year extension, the team announced Sunday night. The Globe’s Nick Cafardo reported Sunday the deal was worth $16 million.
“With this agreement, we have near certainty that David Ortiz will finish his career in a Red Sox uniform, which is something we have all wanted and that we are all proud of,’’ Red Sox owner John Henry said in a statement released by the team.
Ortiz has a $15 million contract for this season. The 38-year-old hit .309 with 30 home runs and 103 RBIs last season. He carried the Red Sox to a World Series title in 2013, posting a .688 batting average in the series.

Ortiz has hit 431 home runs in his big league career. With the Red Sox, he has hit 373 home runs, a total that trails only Ted Williams, Carl Yastrzemski, Jim Rice, and Dwight Evans; he is within 10 home of overtaking Evans and Rice for third place on that list.
An extension with starter Jon Lester could also be in the works before Opening Day.
