Agent: Wagner not retiring
Red Sox reliever Billy Wagner told the New York Post yesterday that he was seriously considering retirement and may not even talk to teams in free agency.
Today, his agent says otherwise.
“He has every intention of playing next season,” Bean Stringfellow told FoxSports.com’s Ken Rosenthal.
Wagner, a 15-year veteran, was traded to the Red Sox in August, shortly after returning to the New York Mets following nearly a year after undergoing Tommy John surgery.
“He wants a ring and he did not do all that rehab just to quit now,” Stringfellow told Rosenthal. “His family supports him fully.”
The Red Sox have an $8 million club option on Wagner, but as one of the terms of convincing him to waive his no-trade clause and accept the deal from the Mets, the club agreed not to pick up the option.
Wagner, 38, is sixth on the all-time saves list with 385, and has mentioned a desire to reach the 400-save milestone.
