Smoltz signs with Cardinals
The St. Louis Post-Dispatch is reporting this afternoon that John Smoltz, who was designated for assignment by the Red Sox Aug. 7 after a disastrous eight-start run with the club, has agreed to terms with the Cardinals.
Smoltz, who cleared release waivers at 1 p.m. this afternoon, will join the first-place Cardinals as their fifth starter once the deal becomes formal. According to the website, there were no hitches in the negotiations and a deal is expected soon.
The 42-year-old, who has 212 major league victories — 210 with the Atlanta Braves — went 2-5 with an 8.32 ERA for the Red Sox. In his final start, a loss to the Yankees on Aug. 6, he allowed eight earned runs in 3 1/3 innings.
He signed a one-year, $5.5 million deal with the Red Sox in January. The Cardinals will have to pay only a prorated share of the MLB minimum salary, roughly $100,000. The Red Sox will be responsible for the remainder of his salary.
