Here’s an interesting item for those who believe the Red Sox could use an upgrade at shortstop.

According to John Schlegel of MLB.com, the Milwaukee Brewers have demoted former All-Star shortstop J.J. Hardy to Triple A in a shakeup that included designating third baseman Bill Hall for assignment and recalling top shortstop prospect Alcides Escobar. The Brewers, who are 14-23 since the All-Star break, also fired pitching Bill Castro.
There has been some speculation that the Sox would have interest in the 26-year-old Hardy. While he has struggled this season, batting .229 with 11 homers, 45 RBIs, and a .667 OPS, he has had success in the past and is regarded as a dependable defender.
In 2007, he batted .277 with 26 homers and 80 RBIs while making his first All-Star team. Last season, he batted .283 with 24 homers, 77 RBIs, and a career-best .343 on-base percentage.
Hardy was the subject of trade rumors leading up to the July 31 non-waiver deadline.
