Eck to fill in for Remy
With the ailing Jerry Remy still on the sidelines, the Red Sox couldn’t have found a more appropriate candidate to provide relief.
Hall of Famer Dennis Eckersley will join play-by-play voice Don Orsillo as the color commentator for NESN’s telecasts of the Red Sox-Yankees series, tonight through May 6.
Eckersley, who usually serves as a Red Sox studio analyst on NESN, will fill in for the popular Remy, who has missed the last four games after returning home with an illness before the start of the club’s series in Tampa Bay.
Remy said via Twitter yesterday that he has suffered a setback in his recovery from pneumonia, which kept him away from the beginning of spring training. It is still uncertain how long he will be away from the broadcast booth.
Eckersley played eight seasons (1978-1984, 1998) with the Red Sox. He was the AL Most Valuable Player and Cy Young winner while the Oakland Athletics’ closer in 1991.
One more broadcast note: Former Red Sox outfielder Dave Roberts will make his debut tonight as a studio analyst.
