Bubba Bell’s broken-bat RBI single with two outs in the ninth capped a come-from-behind win for the Sea Dogs. Portland trailed, 8-4, with six outs remaining, but scored two runs in the eighth and three in the bottom of the ninth to make a winner of reliever Justin Hedrick. Jon Still hit his second home run of the season for Portland. Bell, Still, Josh Reddick, Ryan Khoury, and Aaron Bates each had two hits. Lars Anderson went 1 for 4 with two runs scored, including the winner. Starter Adam Mills allowed 10 hits and six earned runs in three innings.
Kinston 3, SALEM 2: Catching prospect Luis Exposito hit a two-run homer to account for both Salem runs. Former Harvard standout Zak Farkes went 1 for 4 with a double, while Ryan Kalish singled for Salem’s only other hit. Starter Jose Capellan allowed eight hits and two earned runs in 4 2/3 innings, walking four without a strikeout. Ryne Miller took the loss in relief, allowing a lone run in 2 1/3 innings, striking out three.
GREENVILLE 4, Savannah 3: Casey Kelly, the pitcher/shortstop who was the Red Sox’ first-round pick in 2008, improved to 3-0 on the mound this season. He pitched five innings, allowing nine hits and three runs (two earned). He walked one and struck out seven. His ERA is now 0.90. Fabian Williamson earned the save with four innings of hitless relief. Michael Almanzar hit a solo home run. Will Middlebrooks and Mitch Dening each hit a double, and Dening drove in two runs. Oscar Tejada had a pair of singles and an RBI.
Note: Pawtucket’s game at Syracuse was rained out.
