Penny’s thoughts
The Red Sox got some encouraging signs — or at least encouraging words — from starting pitcher Brad Penny this morning.
The big righthander, who made just four appearances for the Dodgers after June 14 last season while battling a sore shoulder, said he is on his regular throwing program and feels like he has no limitations physically, though he expects that the Sox could give him an extra day of rest every now and then.
If healthy, Penny is the prime candidate to be the Sox’ No. 4 starter. On Dec. 30, the 30-year-old signed a $5 million deal with incentives that could raise the total to $8 million. He was 16-4 with a 3.03 ERA in 2007, but slipped to 6-9 with a 6.27 ERA last season.
Penny said he is already comfortable in the Red Sox’ clubhouse, having reunited with a few former teammates, including fellow former Marlins Mike Lowell and Josh Beckett as well as ex-Dodgers Takashi Saito and J.D. Drew.
Amalie Benjamin, our ace in Ft. Myers, will stop in this afternoon with more from Penny, so be sure to check back.
