Lowell has surgery
As expected, Red Sox third baseman Mike Lowell had surgery this morning to repair the hip injury that ended his season in the first round of the postseason.
Lowell had arthroscopic surgery to repair a torn tendon in his right hip, and he also had a bone spur removed, according to Red Sox spokesman John Blake.
Lowell, the 2007 World Series MVP, was limited to one at-bat in the final 11 games of the regular season, and, clearly ailing, he went 0 for 8 in two American League Division Series games before he was removed from the roster in favor of infielder Gil Velazquez.

Blake said Lowell wanted to have the surgery now to have sufficient time to recover before the start of spring training.
