Just how important is this three-game series to the Rays?
It’s only the biggest event in the franchise’s 11 years of existence. Or so says Tampa Tribune columnist Martin Fennelly, who writes:
This could be the greatest week in Rays history. Not that there were any greatest weeks in previous Rays history, but you get the idea. There has never been a homestand like this.
While subtly chiding fans for the Rays’ underwhelming attendance numbers, Fennelly says that this has a chance to be a classic September playoff race:
But this is how it should be – the Rays and Red Sox eyeball to eyeball, waiting for the other guy to blink. This is how it should be, Kazmir against Dice-K tonight. This is how it should be, with Evan Longoria back, with David Price finally here.
Now we know what this means to the Rays, a question for you, Boston fans: Where does this series rank in terms of importance in Red Sox history? Probably not so high by comparison, eh?
