Wells done well

Now this standing ovation we understand.

David Wells was lifted in favor of Keith Foulke and received a trhunderous ovation from the Fenway fans, who gave the same reaction last week after the lefty allowed four runs and 10 hits. Today, he gave up just six hits and went deeper than any other Sox pitcher had managed.

Wells, of course, seemed reluctant to come out of the game, with a runner on second and one out in the eighth, but he tipped his hat to the crowd as he walked off the field.

A Foulke wild pitch closed the book on Wells for the afternoon and gave the Yankees a 2-0 lead.

This series has been the highest attended series in the post-World War II era, according to Red Sox spokesperson John Blake, which isn’t a surprise really. Consider it’s a rare five-game series, the Yankees are in town, and Fenway has more seats than ever.
