Sound the alarm
Terry Francona walked into his pregame meeting with the media this morning amidst the sound of a blaring alarm. No, really.
A malfunctioning fire alarm went off in the conference room for about the first five minutes of the Red Sox manager’s briefing, but its significance was not lost on anyone: It may indeed be time to sound some sort of distress signal. Boston is in imminent danger of being swept in this five-game series against New York and falling 6 ½ games out in the AL East race.
Francona said he stayed at Fenway until about 3:30 this morning — with the task of demoting Craig Hansen a primary reason — and then had to drive his son not too long after that to catch a 6:15 a.m. train.
“I mean my ex-son,” he joked.
Jonathan Papelbon is almost assuredly ruled out of today’s game after throwing 42 pitches in last night’s loss, Francona said. The manager also said that Kyle Snyder will start tomorrow night’s game at Anaheim.
“We’ll try very hard to stay away from [Snyder] today,” he said, only half jokingly.
