Hansen demoted
The Red Sox today sent pitcher Craig Hansen back to Pawtucket, less than 12 hours after the rookie surrendered the winning runs to the Yankees in the top of the 10th inning of last night’s loss. The Sox called up pitcher Bryan Corey to take his roster spot.
Hansen is fourth pitcher the Sox have either demoted or designated for assignment since Friday afternoon. Jason Johnson and Rudy Seanez were designated, and Jermaine Van Buren was recalled then optioned back to the minors.
In his last 10 appearances dating to July 29, Hansen has allowed 13 earned runs in 10 1/3 innings with an ERA of 11.32.
“We haven’t lessened our expectations of what he’s going to do for us,” manager Terry Francona said this morning. “It was really difficult for him to hear that about being demoted, but it’s in his best interest.”
Corey will be joining the team from Ottawa; the Sox hope to have him at Fenway for at least part of today’s game. Hansen won’t join the PawSox until they go to Syracuse later this week.
“Let him take a day and let him air out,” Francona said. “Then the message will be more clear.”
The Globe’s Gordon Edes reported this morning that Hansen left the clubhouse quickly last night without comment. It appeared he may have been called into Francona’s office for a postgame chat, according to Edes.
