It was missing from the resume, so why not the longest regular season nine-inning game as well? Heck, it was meant to be.
The Red Sox and Yankees set a major league record with tonight’s game, which clocked in at 4:45, the Yankees beating the Sox, 14-11. That easily breaks the 4:27 it took the Dodgers and Giants to play on Oct. 5, 2001. Want a scapegoat? Alex Cora played in that game for the Dodgers and tonight for the Sox.
Only these two could cram almost nine hours of baseball into a single day.
The Yankees take both games in the day-night doubleheader, as the Sox fall 3 ½ games back in the AL East race, despite yet more ninth-inning heroics from David Ortiz, who hit his 43rd homer off Mariano Rivera with one out.
