Lastings impression
Pedro Martinez certainly would have liked better.
Lastings Milledge continues to have trouble in left field at Fenway, dropping a fly ball for a two-base error that allowed a pair of runs to score, as the Sox lead 4-0 already out of the gate. Milledge misplayed a ball hit by Manny Ramirez in last night’s game that allowed two runs to score. His latest episode had the sellout crowd buzzing, and Mets manager Willie Randolph looking perplexed.
Trot Nixon had hit a sacrifice fly with the bases loaded and Jason Varitek added a run-scoring single as the Red Sox got to Pedro for the Sox’ first two runs.
Martinez’s fastball topped out in the 88-89 miles per hour range. Perhaps his best pitch was a 75 mph changeup which David Ortiz was fooled on, swinging and missing. He threw 29 pitches in the inning.
