A bust for Pedro
Alex Gonzalez’s second home run in as many nights was the final straw for Willie Randolph. After Gonzalez hit a 1-0 pitch from Martinez into the Green Monster seats, Randolph finally got his bullpen working. With the Sox rolling, 8-0, and Josh Beckett pitching lights out, allowing just one hit thus far, the crowd at Fenway started the “Pe-dro” chant even louder, but perhaps sensing this would likely be his last inning, gave him a polite hand as he walked off the field to end the third.
In his return to Fenway, Martinez was a bust, allowing seven hits and eight runs, six earned. He struck out just one and walked two.
