Sheff delight

The fans took some measure of delight in Gary Sheffield’s ninth-inning at-bat, taunting him with steroid chants, and watching him cut mightily on three Papelbon offerings, fouling one back, and missing two more, each with more force than the previous one.

Before the game, Sheffield had told the media because he swung the bat so hard, he was a little nervous about swinging and missing, and what it might mean for his injured left wrist. His manager, Joe Torre, had some sound advice for Sheffield’s dilemma.

“The only thing I’d advise him to do is not miss,” he said.
