Closer Bobby Jenks is throwing in the White Sox bullpen, where in the stands just off to the right, one fan touted a huge banner with Jenks’ name written in big, bold lettering.
Meanwhile, David Wells is finished for the night. Not a bad performance (he gave up just two earned runs), but was really hurt by Graffanino’s error in the fifth, the only inning the White Sox scored. Jonathan Papelbon is getting his first taste of postseason baseball.
Just as yesterday, a Red Sox pitcher left the mound to the thunderous “Nah, nah, nah, nah. Hey, hey, hey, goodbye” of the 40,799 at US Cellular, who are now doing their best to catch up to the vocals of Jon Bon Jovi in “Living on a Prayer.”
— There was a smattering of polite applause from the fans when Tony Graffanino led off the top of the seventh inning, an appreciation for the error that helped give Chicago a 5-4 lead.
Graffanino grounded weakly to the shortstop.
— The fans in left field have been trying to get on Manny Ramirez’s case all series. Yesterday they chanted his name, a la Daryl, and tonight, just a much simpler “Manny sucks.” Neither chant picked up too much steam though, and quickly died out.
