Boston Red Sox

Error of their ways

To the thunderous chants of “Bob-by, Bob-by,” Bobby Jenks came into the game in the eighth inning, going for the two-inning save, and got the Red Sox to go fairly quietly in the White Sox’ stunning 5-4 victory over the Red Sox in Game 2 of this division series.

And so, the Red Sox face a 2-0 ALDS deficit just as they did two years ago against Oakland, and just as they did in 1999 against Cleveland. Boston, of course, came up victorious in both of those series.

The Red Sox also went down 0-2 in 1995 to the Indians, but ended up losing that series. In this one, so far Tony Graffanino’s error is the play under the microscope, the changing moment of the series. Conceivably, the way Wells was pitching, the Red Sox could have held this game in check. Instead, the error opened the door for a five-run inning, Chicago’s second five-run frame in consecutive days.

Graffanino did his bit part at redemption, doubling in the bottom of the ninth, but it was not enough.
