Boston Red Sox

Power struggle

A few fans in the left field seats were trying to get a “Who’s Your Papi?” chant started, to not so much avail. Ortiz did reach on an error in the third, but was left stranded when Manny Ramirez grounded out.

In the bottom of the inning, White Sox fans got their own chant going for a slugging Sox player, as Paul Konerko went deep, sparking the crowd into its “Paul-ly Paul-ly” refrain. Konerko’s homer went an estimated 370 feet for his first postseason round-tripper, and it’s a 6-0 lead for Chicago.

Jeremi Gonzalez is now throwing in the Red Sox bullpen.

— Boston’s Game 2 pitcher, David Wells, bristled today in his pregame press conference when one reporter suggested that some have said the Red Sox do not have enough depth to win the World Series.

“Who said that?” Wells asked. “Our depth has been criticized? Is it unfair? Sure, I mean I think that we’ve had problems, but we’ve overcome those situations. We’ve had a lot of injuries, but still we’re in the postseason. So, I mean there’s a lot of teams out there that did have depth and didn’t make it.”

–The White Sox’ five-run first inning tied a club record for the second-longest outburst in the postseason. It was the largest since Game 3 of the 1993 ALCS at Toronto. The White Sox also scored five in the fourth inning of Game 2 of the 1917 World Series. Hmm.

The largest outburst in Chicago postseason history was a seven-run third inning in the 1959 World Series.
