Boston Red Sox

Hand in hand

In picking up his 13th save of the season tonight in Boston’s 5-3 win over the Yankees, a victory that locked the Red Sox with New York for first in the AL East again, Mike Timlin made his 80th appearance on the season. Already a career high, that is now the most by any Sox pitcher since Greg Harris in 1993.

The mention of Harris of course sparked discussion in the press box about the ambidextrous pitcher, and how manager Joe Morgan never let him perform the feat of pitching with both arms in a single game, or at all. Harris was a righty only in his years in Boston. He had to wait until 1995 when he was with the Expos to go both ways in a game.

As for the rest of the bullpen, it was lights out. In the eighth inning, Chad Bradford made one pitch to Gary Sheffield, who grounded to short, and Mike Myers battled through an epic foul-off fest by Hideki Matsui, one that ended with a strikeout. Timlin came in with two outs in the eighth, and the bases empty to record the four-out save.

— The television in the lower right hand corner of the press box has been tuned to the White Sox-Indians game all night on FSN Ohio, and when the Indians tied the game at one in the bottom of the ninth, the word spread throughout the media members like wildfire.

— Jorge Posada might have been one more syllable away from getting tossed after arguing the called third strike from Mike Timlin that closed out the eighth inning.

— As the teams left the field, Fenway workers wasted no time switching Boston and New York on the left field AL East standings board, putting Boston back on top, to the roar of the departing crowd. Even if they are tied for first…

— We’ll go gather some reaction and squeeze one more post in on the night…
