American racers win handcycling and duo teams categories
Alfredo de los Santos and Jo Ann Outten-Kenton won the handcycling category while Shamus and Shaun Evans won the duo teams.

Americans swept the handcycling and duo-teams categories at this year’s Boston Marathon.
In the men’s handcycling event, 55-year-old Alfredo de los Santos won the race with the time 1:07:36, averaging 2:35 minutes per mile.
De los Santos was also victorious in 2022 where he completed the course in 1:08:40.
After moving to the United States from the Dominican Republic, de los Santos joined the army after the Sept. 11 attacks. In 2009, while he was serving in Afghanistan, he was wounded when the vehicle he was in was hit by a rocket fire. De los Santos ended up losing his right leg above the knee, according to the Challenged Athletes Foundation.

As a part of his rehabilitation, de los Santos picked up handcycling. The army veteran represented the United States in the paralympics in 2016 and 2020 where he earned a bronze medal in the Mixed Team Relay in Rio.
In the women’s handcycling event, certified athletic trainer Jo Ann Outten-Kenton took the title. She finished in 1:42:57, with an average of 3:56 minute per mile.
The 54-year-old has been a hip disarticulation amputee since 2008 when a high school football player crashed into the trainer, according to Delaware Online.
The father-son duo Shaun and Shamus Evans, from New York, won the duo teams category of the 2025 Boston Marathon with a time of 2:58:53.

Shamus Evans was born with cerebral palsy but that didn’t stop his dad from including him on runs. Shaun Evans started pushing Shamus Evans when he was 18-months-old, according to the University at Albany.
The pair have been competing since 2013, including participating in last year’s Boston Marathon, where they earned second place with a time of 2:55:35.
In February, Shamus and Shaun Evans competed in their first international race, the Tokyo Marathon, where they were one of the first duo teams to race.
