In our “Why I’m Running” series, Boston Marathon runners share what’s inspiring them to make the 26.2-mile trek from Hopkinton to Boston on April 15, 2019.

Name: Kelsie Earley
Age: 34
From: Louisville, Colorado
Bib #: 26015

I’m running the 2019 Boston Marathon for Bill Moran. He was a co-worker and friend of mine who passed away from melanoma last August. He left behind a wife, Kathy, and two daughters — he was helpful, kind, and caring — the epitome of a caregiver. He was young and left a family behind, and I’ve known a number of people from family to neighbors who have had an encounter of some type with skin cancer. His passing gave me pause, and I felt called to do something. As a result I want to contribute to melanoma awareness.

I’m a native Coloradan, wife, mother, and nurse. I love to mountain bike, run, ski, and spend time with my family and friends. This will be my first marathon! I’m a bit intimidated by the whole thing, but I’m sure this cause and my friend’s memory will push me through.

Coloradans are exposed to an excessive amount of ultraviolet radiation due to our elevation, 300-plus days of sunshine, and love for the outdoors. As a result, we rank among the highest in the nation for skin cancer incidence and mortality rates.

Thank you for taking the time to read my story. Please consider supporting me in the fight against melanoma by donating to Team IMPACT Melanoma.
