In our “Why I’m Running” series, Boston Marathon runners share what’s inspiring them to make the 26.2-mile trek from Hopkinton to Boston on April 15, 2019.

Name: Georgios Lappas
Age: 25
From: Weymouth, Massachusetts
Bib #: 27067

My name is Georgios Lappas, I am 25 years old and was born and raised in the beautiful state of Massachusetts. I began running races three years ago as a way to get back into shape. What started off as a three-mile Spartan race soon turned into multiple Spartan races along with a few half marathons. Running these races had now become a huge part of my life.

Unfortunately, in 2016 things changed and my father suddenly passed away. Racing became more than just running to me as it was my way of dealing with the tough times that followed. I made myself a promise that within the next couple years I would run the Boston Marathon in his honor, but after much searching around and being introduced to MDA my promise had another added feature. My goal now was to not only honor my father but to help make a difference in helping an incredible cause. I want to show people that anything is possible in life as long as they work hard for it. I look forward to completing my first ever Boston Marathon and raising over $12,000 for the Muscular Dystrophy Association.
