I am honored to run the 2019 Boston Marathon with the Dana-Farber Marathon Team! This year my motivation is my good friend Pat Beauregard. Pat was diagnosed with stage IV colon cancer at the age of 29. After multiple surgeries and endless rounds of chemotherapy, Pat’s fight and determination are as strong as ever. In Pat’s own words: “Cancer sucks, but I am happier than I’ve ever been… quit complaining, cherish what you have, and enjoy every single day that is given to you.”
It is incredible to see Pat’s fortitude through so many rounds of treatment. Even after 33 rounds of chemotherapy, Pat is still able to join myself, and a core group of friends, for the occasional 5 a.m. training run around Castle Island.
While I haven’t run a marathon before I am an avid runner and triathlete. Through all of my training, the early mornings and hills that feel like they are never going to end, I try to think about Pat and all those out there in similar situations whose treatment is so much more physically and mentally grueling than what I choose to do.
So why am I running? I am running to honor Pat and his amazing wife Amanda, they are true inspirations and reminders not to get caught up in the petty daily frustrations that life throws at us. #PandaPower
