"Knowing that I can cross that finish line in honor of Jess and many others who have been affected by cancer brings nothing but goose bumps to my skin."
In our “Why I’m Running” series, Boston Marathon runners share what’s inspiring them to make the 26.2-mile trek from Hopkinton to Boston on April 16, 2018. Editor’s note: Due to the number of submissions already received, we are no longer accepting entries for this year’s race.Name:

Sarah Hasenauer.
During my time at Liberty Mutual, I’ve had the opportunity to work with some amazing people, many of whom have turned into good friends. One of these is Jessica Burke. Last year at this time, Jess was prepping for the most exciting time of her life — becoming a mother! Jess was worrying about things like what crib to buy, what she would do on maternity leave, and, most importantly, what she would name her daughter. On April 20, 2017, Eleanor Kathleen Burke was born. The next couple months would be the best months of Jess, her husband, and their families lives. As summer came to a close Jess’ biggest concern was her maternity leave coming to an end and not being able to spend all her time with Ellie. That quickly changed when Jess found out two weeks after returning to work that she was diagnosed with Stage 4 colon cancer.
As Jess has been enduring the most difficult time of her life, I wanted to help in any way I could, so I immediately applied to be part of the Dana-Farber Marathon Challenge Team. Running a marathon is a very small feat compared to what Jess and anyone else battling cancer is going through. I am grateful for my amazing training season and everything that I’ve learned my body can handle. Every long run, when the miles start getting harder, Jess’ positive attitude keeps me going.
When I think of the greater world of running, the best day to run is Marathon Monday. Knowing that I can cross that finish line in honor of Jess and many others who have been affected by cancer brings nothing but goose bumps to my skin. More so, I can impact those going through the treatment of cancer by the brilliant doctors of Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in hopes that they can be the ones who have more “good days,” whether they are filled with running, or just another day with their loved ones.
