Race Director Dave McGillivray told Boston.com that a key ingredient in the Boston Marathon’s success is the crowd, the hundreds of thousands of Bostonians who turn out to support the runners. The spectators most experienced in helping the droves pounding past, McGillivray said, are the ones who don’t need to drive to the route.

“They’re walking out their front doors, and they’ve been doing it for 10 years, 20 years, 30 years, 40 years,” he said.
