After winning a bronze medal in the Rio Olympic marathon, Galen Rupp is now on course to run in a very competitive Boston field in 2017.

In what was only his second competitive marathon, Rupp surprised experts by medaling in the 2016 Olympics in August. His only other marathon race was the U.S. Olympic trials. So he will line up at the start of the Boston Marathon on April 17 as a relative newcomer to competing at the distance.

Rupp was announced as a member of the 2017 field (which will welcome back both its 2016 men’s and women’s champions) on Wednesday morning.

Shalane Flanagan, who grew up in Marblehead, will also return to Boston after a one-year absence training for Rio. The men’s 2014 champion, Meb Keflezighi, was already known to be in the field. The trio will be joined by other prominent U.S. runners like Abdi Abdirahman, Desireee Linden and Jared Ward.

Other elite U.S. runners include Esther Atkins, Shadrack Biwott, Lindsay Flanagan, Jordan Hasay, Sean Quigley and Clara Santucci.

Rupp has much more experience as a track athlete in other races. He won a silver medal at the 2012 London Olympics in the 10,000-meter.
