Bill Richard gave Tatyana McFadden her winner’s golden laurel wreath. Then she gave it right back.

McFadden, who won the women’s wheelchair division of the Boston Marathon for the third year in a row, competed on Team MR8, raising money for The Martin W. Richard Charitable Foundation. The foundation honors Bill and Denise Richard’s son Martin, who was killed in the 2013 bombings at the age of 8.

McFadden said she gave the wreath back to Richard at the finish line as “a symbol of hope.’’

“It was a really, really tough finish,’’ McFadden told WCVB. “The wind was a factor, but it went in my favor today.’’
